East TN is full of interesting small towns that highlight Appalachian heritage and can provide a fun-filled, active vacation at a great value.

Get outdoors! Hiking is free. Besides all the great places to hike, enjoy the outdoors through the state and national parks systems. You'll find a ton of great shady picnic spots next to rippling brooks perfect for kiddos who like to splash and for shutterbugs looking to capture the beauty of the Smoky Mountains and the Cumberland Mountains. (Cosby entrance to GSMNP and Frozen Head State Park are good examples of this. Cades Cove and the Chimney's at Sugarlands Visitor Center too.)
Bring individual refillable water bottles - not only "green" friendly, but also a great way to save costs on staying hydrated. Refill bottles at hotel or waterfountain.
Stay in a neighboring community just a short daytrip from the major attractions - you'll spend more time enjoying the scenery, enjoy savings on meals and accommodatand offered by a small town.
Research "deals" and coupons offered on local community travel websites. Savings form buying combo tickets can really add up.
Eat lunch in the room - you'd be amazed how easy it is take a breather from the heat of the day for a quick sandwich and chips. A familly of 4 can easily save over $100 - $200 over the course of a week. Or, visit a local farm tour or farmer's market for fresh-from-the-farm meal at a portion of the cost of eating at a restaurant.
Travel off the beaten path - trade a day at the amusement park for a day at a nearby museum. You'll learn a ton about local history and exploring smaller towns really gives you the flavor of the local culture.
Travel during the off-season - East Tennessee if gorgeous no matter what time of year you visit. You'll avoid the prime season rates and crowds by visiting during the shoulder or off season.
